Christina's gentle touch that heals

Japan is famous for its bustling cities and the high-tech lifestyles of its people and yet the Land of the Rising Sun may have given the West the cure for executive stress. REBECCA BURGESS learns more

Executive stress and unhappy alcohol and drug-fuelled lifestyles have brought people flocking to the healing hands of former model Christina Moore who practises the Japanese art of Reiki. Reiki is a deeply relaxing form of healing where master in the practice places their hands lightly on 15 positions round the body and allows the corporeal energy to flow. Its principle is to allow the energy centres, chakras, to flow freely by letting 'Universal' energy flow through the healer into the patient in a bid to cure and prevent emotional and physical illness.

Christina started practising healing about eight years ago when she suddenly decided to 'treat' a friend's headache. She said: "I put my hands on her head and three or four minutes later her headache had gone. I thought that was a bit odd and then I just started meeting the right people and the energy started coming out. Then I started to train in Reiki."

Christina studied for 31 months and is now qualified 'Master'. The 31-year-old is now full time healer, but in her early years worked as model, ran a restaurant and worked in accountancy. Now she has turned her hands to the art of Reiki which was redeveloped from ancient Buddhist teaching about 100 years ago by Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese professor of Theology. REI means 'universal' and refers to the spirit and soul and KI means 'vital life force' which flows through all that is alive. Christina explained: "I want to assist a person to get better, to be their best and the energy flows into me and out of my hands and into the person who needs the healing. It's not my energy, it's the universal energy." The Reiki is intelligent and it doesn't matter where the patient has the problem, it will go to where the problem really is.

One example was a client with a bad knee and Christina told him this was because his hips were crooked due to an energy block in his spine because of financial worries. She said: "After four sessions it brought about great change and he said his knee still hurt but he had realised all these things in his life. Then the physical change will come later."

When a client arrives Christina explains the nature of Reiki before reading their aura to discover their needs. She said: "Very often they ask me 'What do you make of me?' and I read them, I sit next to them and the information flows in. Sometimes you can pin-point the person in their life that's caused the problem and sometimes it's just general." Then the client lies on quilt on the floor and Christina spends more than an hour channelling energy through her hand. Her healing has been used to treat a number of conditions including cancer, asthma, skin diseases, depression, tinitus, strokes, back pain and high blood pressure. Christina said: "I will treat anything because it doesn't mean a complete cure, it means being the best that you can be at that moment in time."

Since moving to Brighton two-and-a-half years ago, Christina has encountered different range of conditions than previously in her former Buckinghamshire home. She said: "Down here there are a lot of destructive issues, a lot of young people come down to Brighton and they are not particularly healthy in their attitude towards themselves so you get people who drink a lot or use drugs, or a lot of students who say 'I am lost'."

When it comes to treating cancer Christina says in terminal cases she can enhance the life the person has left. She said: "You can change the emotional attitude towards the cancer and you can help them see what's important and makes the last few months better." She advocates a mixture of medical treatment and complimentary therapy in serious conditions, saying the Reiki minimises the side effects of treatment and keeps the body fighting. Christina, who also dedicates her time to raising standards in the teaching of Reiki, is clearly not on money-making mission because her ultimate aim not to see her clients again.

She said: "I want them to go away healthy and they can go out of that door and know they can cope with life. If they can't, then I have done something wrong." Reiki is particularly effective at relieving stress and balancing emotions. One treatment is said to be physiologically the equivalent of three to four hours sleep. But some clients can be particularly troublesome and Christina said after treating one girl with hangover she wouldn't want to do it again. She said: "The second I touched her, waves of nausea came over me. I had bad headache and then the second I took my hands off her it went away. Another lady came to me with extremely high blood pressure, it was consistently about 180, and when I touched her my heart was doing the same, but that was a real physical symptom and it was lovely to see it reduce." Christina claims a 98 per cent success rates with clients. She offers Reiki, Chakra and Aura healing at a cost of £55 and can be contacted on 01273 272774 or 07966 528455.
